Homemade Deodorant Recipe
There is a drawer in my bathroom that is stuffed full of different natural deodorants. I know other people on here have had a sensitivity to baking soda, but I`ve used baking soda on my skin before without issues (deodorants, exfoliants, etc.) I told my mom maybe we should leave out the baking soda next time, but she`s concerned about odor control if we do that.
Everyone is worried about the breast cancer risk tentatively associated with deodorant use. Coconut oil melts at 76°, so if your home is pretty warm, you will need to refrigerate it to keep it solid. For years, I`ve combined coconut oil with arrow root, tea tree oil, and baking soda to make my own deodorant.
I`ve been using this type of
home made deodorant
for about three years. At the start I developed itchy red bumps under my armpits, though didn`t get the peeling you`ve described. After much experimenting I found that modifying the dry ingredients to 1 part baking soda to 3 parts arrowroot/cornstarch fixed the problem.
Please note, however, that this recipe is still somewhat creamy, and less solid than most commercial deodorant. I opt for aluminum free deodorant too, but I had heard that crystal deodorants still had aluminum which was why I hadn`t tried them. I just made this recipe a week ago, I followed the amounts in the recipe exactly and it made 4 tubes of deodorant. Thanks for reaching out + for sharing :). This deodorant recipe happens to work best for me, but if baking soda if your personal go-to, that`s awesome, too! In addition to those things, it is also a highly regarded and highly effective deodorant. Occasionally now I do use baking soda and vinegar on them (it`s so great because there is no lather to worry about) but usually it`s still just a good rise with the bath water. Antiperspirant and deodorant pads (or wipes) are another option for eliminating wetness and odor. Select a variety of your favorite aromatic essential oils to create a natural body spray that will be uniquely yours.
I did notice when I used a big jar of virgin coconut oil for moisturizer and would scoop it out with my hands, that it would smell funny or get a little gross after awhile, even with its natural antibacterial properties. Pour the mixture of water, baking-soda and glycerin slowly into the mixture of oil and stearic acid. Kaolin clay works well as an
in natural deodorants; especially for those with sensitive skin. Milk of magnesia (any brand will do) not only takes care of your tummy but works as deodorant like magic.
You can make your own with arrowroot or tapioca powder scented with a few drops of an antimicrobial essential oil … myrrh is great. I just have to say that I started using coconut oil/baking soda/cornstarch deodorant in Jan, and I haven`t looked back. This works best right out of the shower, but I`ve used this homemade deodorant mid-day without any problems, too. For desert dwellers like me or anyone who wants a bar that is not as pasty, try using raw kokum butter. I have spent hundreds of dollars over the years trying out every natural deodorant on the market that i could find. I decided to try my hand at making him some homemade deodorant for sensitive skin (aka pH balanced for a man). Baking soda and water actually worked pretty well, and most of the time wasn`t even irritating to my skin! I like to start with that mix, and if you need more odor control, add more baking soda.
On the other hand, if you were to want to just replace the almond oil for the castor oil (while still using the zinc), that probably would work fine. The aluminum in Calcium Bentonite Clay is in a safe oxide form, not the dangerous man-made processed aluminum.
I double the recipe and I double the amount of baking soda when I make it and I store this in small sized mason style jars for easy application after I shower. This deodorant won`t have the same antiperspirant properties that some deodorants have, but it will keep you smelling good all day with only minimal use.
